Denise Wylde: Denise is at Columbia University, doing some further research to help
her with her First Aid class. She might have gone to the public library, but
decides that an academic library would have more then the public.
Denise is dressed in her usual favorite clothing that consists of jeans and a
Greenpeace shirt, and her very favorite pair of flip-flops. Her long hair is
french braided down the sides, then pulled down the back and braided down her
back. No makeup at all. She is in a more better mood than normal, there is a
slight spring in her step. She has a satchel with some notepads in it. And has
taken public transportation to get there.
Denise Wylde: Since she hasn't been to the University before, she is trying to do her
best to navigate around and locate the library after getting off the bus.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: The main library, it turns out, is in the south end of the campus, in
between 144th and 116th street. Butler LIbrary houses close to one-third of the
Libraries' on-site collections. The Philip L. Milstein Family College Library,
floors two through four, serves Columbia's undergraduate students. Of special
interest at Butler are the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, which contains more
than 600,000 rare books and 28 million manuscripts. ((http://www.columbia.edu/about_columbia/tour/images/butler.jpg))
As Denise steps up to the doors and slips inside, she finds herself struck by
the absolute enormity of the place. It really is huge.
Denise Wylde: Eventually she has managed to get directions
and after being told she can't miss it, she realizes just how right they are.
She is nearly awestruck by its beauty and the history the eminnates from it. So
she just stands there....staring.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: As she stands there, she hears footsteps come up
behind her, and a calm, even voice. "Your first time here, I imagine."
Denise Wylde: She spins around gracefully, even on those flip-flops, obviously
startled out of her little reverie. "Yes?" she says sheepishly.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: There's a man standing there behind her, hands behind his back and a calm
look on his angular, hawk-nosed face. His hair is a rich brown, hanging slightly
wavy to his shoulders, and his deep brown eyes watch the scenes around him
impassively. He's dressed in a simple green lace-up
shirt and natural fiber pants with a pair of Doc Martins on his feet, and a
simple silver pentacle around his neck. No cell phones, no technology...just a
canvas backpack over one shoulder. He appears to be in his late thirties. He
nods a little bit, and looks up at the building, then back down. "The grandeur
is...impressive, at first. But you get used to that after several visits.
Perhaps I can help you find something, so you do not get lost?"
Denise Wylde: Her blue eyes catch first on the pentacle and that makes hers smile.
"You're a professor here?" she asks, then thinks how stupid that probably wound
up sounding.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He smiles a bit, though the expression is largely without mirth or much
warmth. "I am. I teach and lecture on environmental ethics. Griffen Aston."
Denise Wylde: "Oh, sounds like my kind of class. Professor Aston, or is that Doctor?
I'm Denise....Denise Wylde. Pleasure to meet you sir."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "Professor, if you must use a title." He pauses a moment,
considering...that name seems to strike some recognition with him. He looks at
her Greenpeace shirt, and thinks. "I believe...possibly, we may have a mutual
acquaintance, Miss Wylde."
Denise Wylde: "Oh?" Then glances down to her shirt when he looks at it. "In
Greenpeace?"
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "Indeed." He nods a little bit. "I believe I happened to hear your name
mentioned by an associate of mine within the organization. That you were coming
here."
Denise Wylde: She thinks a bit more.
Denise Wylde: "Sam....Samantha Jackson?"
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He nods a little bit, smiling...perhaps there's
at least a bit of genuine warmth there. "Miss Jackson, yes. Older friend of
mine. She knew I was out here, and thought to send my communications that you
would be arriving."
Denise Wylde: "Isn't that a nice surprise. She still tries
to watch out after me after all."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "Indeed...she's quite the loyal friend." He nods, and then gestures
toward the many, many shelves. "So, then. What may I help you find?"
Denise Wylde: "I'm looking for first aid materials. I'm still trying to figure out
what to do my paper on, but I'm considering either frostbite, or burn treatment.
Any idea where I might be able to start finding materials?"
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He nods. "I do. This way." He starts walking, to lead her to the
appropriate section.
Denise Wylde: She follows after him, still looking around the place in awe.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He walks along, brief nods to people as they move along...the man does
carry himself with a definite sense of reservation, that much is obvious. No one
gets a genuine smile, or more then a moment's attention. He leads her to the
medical books, and starts walking down the aisles, looking. "What sort of paper
is it? Treatment, causes, in-depth study of the history of treatment?"
Denise Wylde: "Personally I love history. And thought I might give some history just
because it interests me. But it's about treatments in general."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He nods to her and starts selecting a couple of books, handing them over
to her. "These should give you a good starting reference to go off of. If you
like, I can also suggest some books on the history of more traditional methods
of first aid...herbals and so-called home remedies."
Denise Wylde: "Oh, I would like that. I'm interested in trying to learn more about
homeopathy and herbalogy."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "Excellent." He nods. "There are some books here, but not many...I
actually have a better library on such topics then here. If you'd like, I can
lend you some of the better ones."
Denise Wylde: "Really? And you would just lend me them because of our mutual friend?"
This does surprise her as she turns to look at him.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "Well...not just because of our mutual friend, no." He shakes his head.
"Because it is rare when someone actually wishes to learn about such things. The
books are not overly valuable in a monetary sense...no real demand for them.
Thus, the only reason one would desire such a book would be to learn from it.
Which I whole-heartedly support."
Denise Wylde: "I'm like an open book," she says somewhat playfully. "It is rare," she
turns more seriously now, "for someone to offer what you have and to see that
the world hasn't gone totally to sh....to...ummm...hell yet. Thus your offer is
very appreciatively accepted."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He smiles a bit and nods. "Excellent. If you would like, I can bring them
by somewhere...I believe she had mentioned something about an aquarium you were
seeking to work at?"
Denise Wylde: "Well, I'm not so sure that I'm going to go that direction any more.
I've been trying to get my own veterinay clinic started. Right now I'm getting
bills paid off, supporting my daughter, and working as a fill in vet at various
clinics for money. I'm also trying to research," she blushs a little, "about
owning and running a business. I don't suppose you have any good books about
that?"
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: A shake of the head. "I'm afraid not. I have never tried to go into
business for myself...I know myself well enough to know that I would have little
talent for that aspect of life. I am sure that there are resources here, though,
that you could find."
Denise Wylde: "Right now, I'm afraid that unless perhaps you had me stop by your
office, or there is my home. I'm not sure how comfortable you might feel about
that."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: A slight nod. "I think, perhaps, my office would be best. It can be found
in [CHRIST, I TRIED TO LOCATE THE APPROPRIATE BUILDING...HARDER THEN I THOUGHT,
SO THIS MESSAGE IS HERE INSTEAD OF THE NAME]." He gives her directions to where
it is. "I can often be found there, though my official office hours are 7 am
until 6 pm."
Denise Wylde: Denise nods and gets out a recycled paper pad and recycled pencil from her
satchel and writes down all the information.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "At any rate, I
shall pull the appropriate books tonight and bring them to my office
tomorrow...I will keep them there, so if you cannot be by tomorrow, they'll be
there whenever you can."
Denise Wylde: "I'm not working tomorrow, so I have time. Plus I can come here, get the
books and work on my paper. Perhaps I could thank you by buying you a cup of
coffee, or tea, or something to your liking?" she offers.
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He gives a brief smile and a non-commital nod. "Perhaps. I do get busy,
but we shall see."
Denise Wylde: "I have an idea....." she considers. "I can bring something to share
when I come by. If it's a drink, in a spillproof container."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He smiles a bit more,
and nods. "That would be most appreciated, Miss Wylde. I look forward to it."
Denise Wylde: "Is there a type of tea you like. Perhaps a coffee? Or something sweet?"
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "Tea, please. Not sweetened or caffeinated...something herbal, perhaps."
Denise Wylde: "Perfect. I think we may have similiar tastes then."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He smiles faintly. "Excellent. We shall make a plan of it,
then....tomorrow. Again, I look forward to it."
Denise Wylde: "I can be here in the morning. Catch you between a class. Thank you
again."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: "Of course. It has been a pleasure to meet you, Miss Wylde."
Denise Wylde: "And you, Mr. Griffon."
Griffen "Aconite" Aston: He inclines his head politely, and steps back a
couple paces, before turning and making his way toward another section of the
library.
Denise Wylde: She moves back through the library, looking for a
reference library to help her find stuff on starting your own business.
